Malfunction Leads To Montauk July 4 Fireworks Fizzle
An aerial shell malfunctioned during the show, leading to the burning, destruction of an electrical component of the firing system network.

MONTAUK, NY — The Montauk Chamber of Commerce released a statement to explain why a popular annual July 4 fireworks show was cut short this year.
A malfunction at the July 4 fireworks in Montauk led to the abbreviated show, according to Laraine Creegan, the chamber’s executive director.
Philip Grucci, chief executive of Fireworks by Grucci and the event's producer, explained what transpired in a letter to the Chamber: “An aerial shell malfunctioned during the show and, unfortunately, this low breaking device occurred near the electrical firing system which, in turn, burned and destroyed an electrical component of our firing system network. Our team worked feverishly . . . they were unable to fully correct the problem during the performance.”

The Chamber set out to explain the incident to the public.
“We regret that our audience received a less than spectacular show and feel it is important for our visitors and members to know exactly what happened,” Creegan said. “We thank everyone for their support and understanding and we look forward to producing a flawless show for all to enjoy next year.”

It was the 13th year the show has been presented by Fireworks by Grucci — and it was the first malfunction, Creegan said. The Chamber has produced fireworks in Montauk for 21 years, she added.
