UPDATE: Montauk Woman Dies After Crash Near Transfer Station: Police

The woman crossed over into the westbound lane and collided with the gas truck, police said.

MONTAUK, NY β€” Update: A Montauk woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident involving a gas truck near the transfer station Tuesday, police said.

Police have identified the woman who died as 63-year-old Janis Hewitt.

According to East Hampton Town Police, David T. Kelleher, 42, of Mastic, was driving a 2015 International Harvester gas truck west on Route 27 when a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser, driven by Hewitt and heading east, crossed into the westbound lane and collided with the gas truck.

Hewitt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kelleher was taken by ambulance to Southampton Hospital, where he was treated and released after being examined in the emergency room, police said.

Officers from the Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Section responded and conducted safety checks on the International gas truck, police said. The 2005 Chrysler was impounded by East Hampton Town Police for a safety inspection, police said.

Hewitt was a reporter for The East Hampton Star for 20 years, the Star reported Tuesday night.

Original story: Emergency responders were on the scene Tuesday afternoon after an accident near the Montauk transfer station, police said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, the accident took place at approximately 12:40 p.m.

East Hampton Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo said Montauk Highway was "closed from Old Highway west end to Lincoln Road while police and emergency crews investigate a serious accident involving a propane truck."

Police were unable to confirm injuries but a scanner alert indicated that the accident may have been head-on, with entrapment.
