What To Do In Montauk During Winter Months

A military base and secret installation built during the Cold War inspired the Netflix hit 'Stranger Things,' the Chamber of Commerce says.

MONTAUK, NY — Montauk isn't just a must-see destination during the sizzling hot summer season.

At least, not according to the Montauk Chamber of Commerce, which said recently that during the winter months, Montauk becomes a secluded enclave with uncommon wintry landscapes and seascapes to explore.

“Just ask one of the hardy local surfers who relish the winter wave swells along the snow-covered beach,” said Laraine Creegan, executive director of the chamber.“To them, winter in Montauk is magical.”

The Chamber suggested a list of activities to explore, including hikes, followed by pampering at an indoor spa or pool. Off-season rates at luxurious hotels are another option, followed by local fare at year-round eateries and cocktails from pubs rich with history, the Chamber said.

Also, Chamber reps said, a visit to the Montauk Point Lighthouse, New York State’s oldest lighthouse, built in 1796, is a must.

"Nearby is the curious military base and secret installation built during the Cold War that inspired the Netflix hit 'Stranger Things.' The show is based on a series of books entitled 'The Montauk Project.'" The radio tower installation is located in Camp Hero State Park, a 425-acre area of woods, beaches and bluffs on the Atlantic, the Chamber said.

Montauk features preserved land, parks, trails, and an abundance of wildlife, including waterfowl such as sea ducks as well as birds and bald eagles.

"It's also possible to do cross-country skiing and snowshoeing within the Edward V. Ecker Sr. County Park, depending on the snow level," the Chamber said, adding that guided seal walk tours are available.

Guided tours occur every weekend from January 1, 2018 to March 31, 2018 for fee of $4 per person. Call 631-668-5000 ext. 200 for a reservation. And, the chamber said, Hither Hills State Park offers trails and stunning views from beaches and bluffs, with sand dunes reaching up to 80' tall.
