$9 million of Sidewalks Requested for Clarkstown

Sidwalk plans were discussed at the Nanuet Civic Meeting April 7th.

Sidewalks are very beneficial to a town. They allow residents to get to local businesses easily and safely and prevent traffic accidents. Clarkstown has 90 miles of sidewalk, 45 of which are taken care of by the town.

At the last Civic Association meeting, Nanuet residents brought up concerns about sidewalk conditions. One man mentioned a Pipetown Hill Road housing complex which was building sidewalks and wanted to expand their sidewalks into neighboring streets.

A few police officers from Clarkstown Police Department addressed these concerns. Currently, $9 million of sidewalks are being requested in Clarkstown. This includes sidewalks that need to be built as well as sidewalks that need to be repaired.

In order to save money, Clarkstown is asking NY State legislators to help with the costs of sidewalks on state roads and Rockland County legislators to help with sidewalks on county roads.

Clarkstown will then assess the remaining town roads and start repairs and building. A professional will assess the amount of foot traffic every sidewalk and road gets and the repairs and building will be done according to those numbers—busier streets getting done before quieter ones.

Of course, all this planning takes time but the residents of Clarkstown can be assured that the board is working hard to keep the sidewalks safe and effective.

*Editor's note: The original article said that the $9 million was requested for Nanuet. It was updated 4/14/11 to clarify that the $9 million is requested for Clarkstown, not just Nanuet.
