UPDATE: Overpass Closed After Thruway Crash

State police report an unusual incident with a tractor-trailer hauling an excavator.

UPDATE: Rockland County officials said:

An accident on the New York State Thruway in Chestnut Ridge this morning has prompted the temporary closure of the Hungry Hollow Road overpass between Oriole Road and Old Nyack Turnpike. The overpass will remain closed to all traffic until state engineers evaluate the structural integrity of bridge. Check back for updates. Many thanks to Rockland County’s HAZMAT team for its quick response.

On January 13, 2016 at approximately 8:55 a.m., State Police responded to a report of a crane in the roadway northbound on I-87.

The investigation determined a 1995 Peterbilt tractor-trailer hauling an excavator struck the Hungry Hollow Road bridge overpass, dislodging the excavator onto the roadway. The driver of the Peterbilt, Steven R. Canfield, 59, of Monroe, NY, was uninjured.

The accident is still under investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available.
