Albertus Magnus Varsity Tennis Topples Nanuet Knights
The young Albertus Magnus team proves that working hard in the off-season pays off
The young girls from Albertus Magnus prevailed against Nanuet in yesterday’s win. The Varisty girls tennis team beat the Knights by a score of 4-3.
Nanuet looked sharp in the beginning with their first two singles girls winning easily in straight sets. Albertus Magnus’s first singles player, Erin Hawley described the difficulty she had against Nanuet’s top player, 16-year-old Kristen Quill.
“She had a great serve and a powerful cross court forehand. I was trying hard to get everything back and keep balls in play, but she moved very well,” the 17-year-old Hawley said.

Nanuet’s second singles player, 17-year-old Ana Gremli, was able to defeat Katie Solesky with no problem. Gremli was pleased with her efforts on the court.
“I was always on my toes. I was keeping my shots in play and making less unforced errors, “ Gremli said.

The remaining matches were in Albertus Magnus’s favor, with the exception of a lengthy second doubles match that was settled in a Super tiebreaker due to the loss of daylight. However, both teams put up a great fight in this tight match up.
Nanuet coach Mark Mitchell believes that the girls are making positive steps forward and was pleased with the girls at No. 1 and 2 singles. Albertus Magnus Coach Caroline Gizzi was proud of her team’s improvements that have paid off from hard work.
“We have a young team of mostly sophomores and freshman. We’ve played more matches outside of the season and kept in shape. This is a huge improvement from last year,“ Gizzi said.
Albertus Magnus’s record is now 2-5, while Nanuet has fallen to 1-7. Here is a box score recap of all of the matches.
