ALBERTUS MAGNUS TEAM WINS FIRST ROUND ON MSG VARSITY'S QUIZ SHOW
Four student scholars from Albertus Magnus High School competed against Port Chester High School and won the first round on MSG Varsity's award winning high school quiz show, "The Challenge." The matchup was taped on Thursday, October 25th in New York City and will air on November 21, 2012. MSG Varsity is Cablevision's 24/7 television network devoted to high school sports, activities, and events in the tri-state area. The team will continue on to the next round which will be taped in February 2013.
The Albertus Magnus team includes four seniors: Lauren Gruffi, Captain, Jack Sullivan, Tom McConnell, and Michael Strack. Sisters Megan Townsend, a junior, and Kiera Townsend, a sophomore are alternates. The team was coached by social studies teacher, Peter Greene and moderated by Noreen Power, Freshman Class advisor and Admissions Director. A fan group of forty students cheered on the Albertus team.

The show is hosted by Jared Cotter, a former FUSE TV host and "American Idol" semi-finalist. The students were tested on several subject areas including arts and literature, current events, history, math, and science.
"The Challenge" originated in Long Island 16 years ago and now covers the entire tri-state area - Nassau and Suffolk Long Island, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Westchester/Lower Hudson Valley, New Jersey, and Connecticut. This season, approximately 200 high schools will compete for the title of Tri-State Challenge Champion - a prize that includes $10,000 for their school and $500 for each member of the winning team.

Albertus Magnus competed for the first time in the Challenge in 2010. Lauren Gruffi, a sophomore at the time, was the team's alternate then. The 2010 team profiles, and the show video and photos can be found here:
"The Challenge" is aired on Sundays through Fridays at 6:30pm on MSG Varsity, Cablevision's iO TV Channel 14.
