Health Department Offers Free Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) Vaccine

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the Rockland County Department of Health is providing free Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine to first responders, businesses, health care workers, volunteers, and the general public. The vaccine is especially important for those working on repair, construction, and clean-up projects after the hurricane, since this increases your risk for tetanus. It also provides protection against two other serious but preventable diseases – pertussis (whooping cough) and diphtheria.

“Vaccinations are essential tools to preventing disease and maintaining our health.  The Tdap vaccine is one such tool.  There has been an increase in whooping cough, and this vaccine provides the added benefit of protecting ourselves and our families, especially infants and children from this disease,” said Dr. Joan Facelle, Rockland County Commissioner of Health.

Tetanus is a serious disease caused by a toxin (poison) made by bacteria. This bacteria is present in dust, soil, or manure and enters the body through puncture wounds or cuts. It can cause painful muscle stiffness, breathing problems, paralysis (inability to move parts of the body) and death.  If you receive wounds or cuts that are contaminated with dirt, and foreign material, seek medical care right away.  Proper wound care is essential. Your healthcare provider can also assess your need for booster tetanus vaccination.

The Tdap vaccine is provided by the Rockland County Department of Health, the Emergency Operations Center, and the New York State Department of Health.
