Nanuet Bead Store Offers Unique Experience
Come in for a class by yourself or with others to create personalized jewelry pieces. The shop assembles customized pieces as well
Valentine's Day is tomorrow and those wanting a unique gift, there's a local option. Instead of buying jewelry for that special someone, why not attend a class to create your own customized jewelry and get your creative juices flowing. Beads Mosaic—located at 38 First Street in Nanuet—offers classes for individuals or groups. One recommendation is signing up as friends, mother/daughter or sisters.
“We have a selection of quality semi precious gemstones, sterling silver beads and charms, vermeil (gold plated silver), seed beads (small beads in various sizes and shapes that can be woven into a vast array of gorgeous jewelry), Swarovski crystals, handmade lamp work (melted glass with colors added and formed into beads) and all the accessories and tools necessary to make beautiful jewelry," said Manager Marianne Olbermann.

There are group classes and private lessons available. $20 private lessons are for beginners and $50 group lessons last about three hours.
“It’s worth a visit, because it’s eye candy; people want to touch," said Olbermann. “The place is unique—selections are constantly growing."

She added that there are also classes in bead weaving, wire work, wire crochet, kumi himo (Japanese braiding of beads) and much more.
“Were’re off the beaten track and yet people come,” said Olbermann. “Beading is therapeutic—any beader will tell you it’s relaxing, stress free and allows for creative outlets. We cater to customers who make jewelry for a business. People visit and revisit. Once they come in, they are hooked."
Before the store opened four and a half years ago, Owners Renu Sawhney and Serita Sethi dealt in sterling silver, semi precious gem stones and pearls, exhibiting them at shows and expos. They started with a large inventory of the latter at Beads Mosaic.
“We needed an office; this place was reasonable and out of the way so we took it,” Renu said. “When we opened, people started saying ‘you must have this… and you must have that’ and the store grew.”
“Neither Renu nor Serita do any beading—their forte is sterling silver and gemstones. The store grew because there was a lack of bead supplies and expertise in Rockland,” said Olbermann. "(At Bead Mosaic), customers become friends in a warm and creative atmosphere. Staff has a genuine love of beading. They constantly make samples as sources of inspiration for customers.”
Jessica Lane and Mary Ann Collins are two employees at the shop.
“We also nurture non-beaders,” said Olbermann. "Anyone can come in, make a selection and it’s assembled to the customer’s wishes."
