Clarkstown Highway Dept Preps for Snow [VIDEO]
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch from Saturday morning through Saturday night
Snow in October? Even if you're not ready for it, the Clarkstown Highway department is.
"It's very unusual, it’s happening very early this year," said Wayne Ballard, superintendent of highways. "It’s better to be safe than sorry so what we did today was set up 35 trucks with plows and preloaded 5 trucks (with salt) in preparation in case something does happen."
According to the , a mix of light snow and rain will begin Saturday morning with accumulations of one to two inches and change to all snow by late afternoon for the lower Hudson Valley.

"I personally think it’s going to rain in the morning and then sometime around 4 p.m. it’s going to switch to snow," said Ballard. "We have road temperature sensors on the deputy vehicles. Depending on the temperature of the road, we decide if we need the application of salt on the roads."
Overnight snowfall could accumulate two to four inches, said the NWS. Travel could be potentially hazardous due to road conditions and tree limbs falling from the heavy wet snow.

"What’s different about this particular snow storm is the leaves on the trees," said Ballard. "If it snows, it’ll land on the tree leaves and weigh it down. We’re expecting tree limbs to snap and fall down. Maybe some trees (will fall too), but we have all of our tree saws ready to go."
