Clarkstown Highway Works Weekends to Rush Clean Up Efforts (VIDEO)

All vehicles and crews are out there cleaning up debris from the storm, according to Ballard

If you drive past Germonds Park in West Nyack, you'll notice an enormous pile of debris. The Clarkstown Highway Department has been collecting branches, leaves, trees and debris from all around town to get streets and yards back to normal. Half of the debris goes to the Clarkstown Compost Facility on Route 59 in West Nyack, which is  managed by the Town Department of Environmental Control. The other half is being dropped off at Germonds Park.

"We're dropping half off at Germonds because the one lane traffic and the scale we have to go over, it's too far a distance and would take too long (to get to the compost facility)," said Wayne Ballard. Superintendent of Highways. "I can get it all here and then we're going to grind it all up and sell it as a ... mulching product."

"I've got damage to the front of the house. It broke the gutters and siding. As long as no one got hurt, that's the big thing," said Michael O'Rourke of Clarkstown. "(Highway response), it's been wonderful. You can only have so many crews. Here we are it's a Sunday and they're out taking care of things."

Ballard said he is "throwing every vehicle we've got" toward the clean up process and that "all employees and crews are out there working, even weekends." He estimated about two weeks for all debris to be picked up. "Then we're going to dive right into leaf pick up."

"I saw them (the highway crews) earlier. They've been working their way down the street," said the Pinciaros of Nanuet, who were outside cleaning up their Grandview Avenue home on Sunday.

"We started yesterday. The whole yard was covered," said the Dell'Armos of Nanuet. "(the highway crews), they've been out for a while. I'm surprised they were here this quickly."
