Kicks for a Cure
Where/When: at 1 p.m. Oct. 15, Saturday
Why Go: Watch a soccer game for a good cause. Kicks for a Cure is a fundraiser to raise Breast Cancer awareness. The Albertus Magnus High School Girls' Varsity Soccer Team will be hosting the Nanuet Knights. Proceeds will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Why Go: The best way to protect your family from fire is to be ahead of the game. The Nanuet Fire Department is holding a Fire Prevention Open House for Fire Prevention Week. This year’s campaign focuses on preventing the leading causes of home fire: cooking, heating and electrical equipment, as well as candles and smoking materials. Additionally, it urges people to protect their homes and families with life-saving planning.

Community Wellness Day
When/Where: Saturday, October 15, 12 p.m. - 3 p.m./St Augustine Parish Church, 140 Maple Ave, New City
Why Go: The 1st annual “Community Wellness Day” in Rockland is part of a national event focusing on educating the members of our community on very important information which is critical to the total wellness for our residents. Information on health, safety, environmental and financial wellness will be shared. Local law enforcement will be on hand to provide important id information for children, families and seniors. The local fire department will be providing fire prevention and safety information. Community agencies will be participating and sharing their programs on car and bicycle safety, Internet safety, identity fraud protection, financial literacy info, health screenings, drug/ alcohol awareness information, and senior services information There will also be food, fun & entertainment. The local chapters of Meals On Wheels and the Rockland Coalition for Better School Foods are the beneficiaries of the event.

2011 Children’s Space & Astronomy Fair
When, where: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 in the Lower Hudson Valley Challenger Center at 225 Route 59 in Suffern.
Why Go: This educational event sponsored by the Rockland Astronomy Club is appropriate for kids ages five and older includes activities and hands-on demonstrations to help teach children and adults about space and astronomy. There will be space mission simulators, planetarium shows and crafts.

Greater Hudson Valley Walk Now for Autism Speaks
When, where: Registration at 9 a.m. with the opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. at the Rockland Community College Field House in Suffern.
Why go: The 4th Annual Greater Hudson Valley Walk Now raises money for Autism Speaks, which funds for research and autism awareness. The event includes the walk, which is between two and three miles, and a recource fair that includes child-friendly activities, providing a wide range of options for families touched by autism. Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us will host a tent. The company’s mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe will be present.
A Small Act: Community Screening
When/Where: , 58 Depew Ave, Nyack; Friday, October 14, 7:00 pm
Why Go: A community screening of the award-winning documentary, "A Small Act" will be hosted by Maloto, a local non-profit dedicated to transforming the lives of children and women living in extreme poverty in northern Malawi, along with Rivertown Film Society and Nyack High School's S.O.S.
