Local Business Offers Unique Kids Summer Cooking Program

Here's an alternative to your regular sports camps

Sure there are plenty of camps this summer that offer your regular athletic or academic programs for your child, but there's a new program starting this summer for the first time with something a little different.

Diane Hoch, owner of the in Bardonia, is starting up a new series of classes this summer called Around the World in Five Days: A Kids Cooking Program.

"We had a 15-year-old boy come in and ask if there was a class for him to take. He told me, 'I want to make a meal for my mom because she works so hard,'" Hoch said, adding that the boy was not the first to take an interest in cooking classes.

The Food Evolution offers healthy cooking classes for adults, but after several scout visits as well as hosting a few school field trips, Hoch realized the enthusiasm kids have for eating healthy today.

"My love is to teach anyone that wants to learn," she said. "Through our classes with the girl scouts and cub scouts, we have discovered that so many kids love to cook and they have an interest in learning how to prepare healthier foods."

Around the World in Five Days: A Kids Cooking Program

  • It's launching with two 1-week programs—July 25-29 and Aug. 1-5.
  • The class runs from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday through Friday
  • Kids can sign up for the entire week or just a few days.
  • There's limited space though as Hoch can only accomodate up to 12 kids each day.
  • 10-16 years old
  • There's a different cuisine each day: Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Mediterranean

Here's a sample day:

  • Starts with a fun craft
  • A healthy organic meal is taught and prepared
  • Ends with the students baking something in the afternoon
  • Both Fridays will be a special banquet day where the child can invite one parent and the kids will vote on one of the four cuisines on Thursday to make for the fifth day, Friday. The kids will create it for their family or friend on Friday.
