Did you know that March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month? To raise awareness the Rockland County Department of Health’s Cancer Institute’s is encouraging both men and women over the age of 50 to get screened for the disease.

“If you are 50 or older, you are at risk for colorectal cancer, and should be tested even if you have no symptoms and no family history of the disease,” said Rockland County Commissioner of Health Dr. Joan Facelle. “90 percent of cases are diagnosed in people older than 50. Both men and women are at risk for colorectal cancer.”

Generally speaking, Colorectal Cancer stems from polyps growing on the lining of the colon or rectum. Since these polyps may be asymptomatic, regular screenings are imperative to ensure that they are removed before they can turn into cancer. As with other forms of cancer, early detection is critical.

The county offers free screenings for individuals who either uninsured or under-insured through the Cancer Services Program of Rockland if they meet eligibility requirements. Resultantly, one’s insurance status or lack thereof should not be a hindrance to accessing these very important medical services.

The Rockland County Cancer Institute also offers education about reducing one’s risk for the disease and early detection. What’s more, it can provide referrals to cancer related services.
