Barr's Meet the Teacher Offers Parents Individualized Attention

There's one more Meet the Teacher Night coming up on Wednesday

Teachers are a foundation in a child's life and may influence their futures as much as their families and friends. Parents often don't get a chance to meet their student's teachers, but Barr Middle School's Meet the Teacher night is an annual event that offers just that.

Nov. 8, 9 and 17* are Meet the Teacher nights. Assistant Principal Ruben Addarich said that this school procedure, in its present form, has been in effect for at least 20 years.

Parents are provided name tags, their childrens’ schedules and maps of the building. If there are little ones, child care is provided, as well.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for parents and students," said Principal Roger Guccione.

Parents have the child’s schedule and meet each individual teacher for five minutes, said Secretary Theresa Cicero. It is up to the parents how many teachers they want to visit. Some may want to visit all and some only one or two.

“It allows parents one-on-one meetings with teachers and it is fantastic," said School psychologist, Cassie Mayer. "It's very beneficial for students and parents.”

“It's a good opportunity for parents to get involved,” said Guidance Counselor Maria Miele.

"The idea is fabulous, and so well-organized," said Parent Diane Kelly. "Individual meetings with parents are much better than Meet the Teacher group events. You get a better snapshot of how your child is doing. Meet the Teacher still exists at the beginning of school."

"I like it, too—the fact that it is individual," said Patricia McGovern another parent.

The general feeling was that the events are well-run and everyone benefits.
