Nanuet All-Stars fall to Haverstraw

The Nanuet 11-year-olds lost after 5 innings due to a 10-run mercy rule.

The 11-year old Nanuet All-Stars came up short Saturday evening at Germonds Park in West Nyack.  The Haverstraw All-Stars beat Nanuet, 12-2, in a game stopped by the 10-run mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Nanuet had difficulty from the start.  By the end of the third inning, they were down 9-0, one run away from being mercy ruled.  There was a bit of hope at the top of the fifth inning, where the boys had the bases loaded.  Right Fielder Dan O’Sullivan hit a double that earned him 2 RBI’s that brought Nanuet back in the game at 9-2.  Unfortunately, that was all they earned.  Haverstraw scored 3 runs at the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game.  The boys were well aware of Haverstraw’s talent, but still felt they could have put up a better fight.

“We made too many mental errors.  We had good fielding, but couldn’t get our heads together,” said second baseman/right fielder Kyle Smith.

“The team didn’t work well today and Haverstraw was good,” said shortstop/pitcher Chris Vanschaick.

First baseman/pitcher William Kuriskl added, “We made a lot of errors and mental errors.”

Nanuet coach Ken Price agreed with the boys that they made a lot of mental and fielding errors, but he did recognize Haverstraw’s talent.

“ We need to be more patient when it comes to hitting and have a better approach,” Price said.

The Nanuet boys still have one more shot to move forward in the All-Star tournament.  They will either play the Suffern or New City All-Stars Tuesday evening.
