Nanuet All-Stars Falls to Congers in Close Game

Congers won 12-11 after Nanuet came back after being down 8 runs

Just moments before the Major Leaguers threw out the first pitch of their annual All Star game, the Nanuet 10-11 Year Old Little League All Stars threw out the first pitch against the Congers All Stars at Mooney Bocket Stadium in the Anderson Field Complex in Orangeburg.

Major League Baseball’s All-Star game was a snoozer compared to this one. Nanuet fell behind 8-0 after the first two innings, but battled back and never gave up. Congers went into the bottom of the sixth with a 12-9 lead. Nanuet, having already erased an 8-run lead earlier in the game was not looking to go quietly.

Nanuet loaded the bases and drove in 2 runs. They found themselves trailing by 1 run with the bases loaded while down to their final out. After falling behind in a 3-1 count, Shane Murphy of Congers, threw two straight strikes to end the game and send the Congers bench wild.

“That was a real nail biter all the way,” said Congers Manager Lonn Rosenthal. “Nanuet is a really strong team with a lot of heart and guts. When you come back like they did, you know you’re a good team.”

Congers offense did seem to be too much for Nanuet early on and there were even murmurs of being “mercied”—or falling behind by 10 runs—in the fourth inning. Josh Rosenthal really did an excellent job as the starter for Congers. He pitch 4 innings and reached his pitch limit before he was taken out.

Nanuet saw their chance and took it. Nanuet went wild and scored all 10 of their runs in the final 2 innings.

“I was definitely a little nervous coming in at the end,” said Murphy. “My team is really supportive and I know they never give up even when it looks bad. I knew I had to get that last strike for them.”
