Photographer Discusses his Gallery: Following in Their Footsteps
Seeing the Present through the Past: A Gallery of Photographs by George Potanovic Jr. at the Suffern Free Library until April 29
Ever stand on a spot and wonder what it would have been like 100 years ago?
Following in Their Footsteps is a gallery of photographs by George Potanovic Jr. portraying current locations in Rockland County in contrast to what the same scenery looked like up to a hundred years ago. When Potanovic took his pictures, he held up a similar photo of the same location but decades in the past.
“The idea was to use old photographs and turn of the century postcards and go back to the exact place where the photographer stood and took the original picture,” said Potanovic.

The gallery features 11 scenes of Rockland County, then and now. Potanovic stopped by the Suffern Library to talk about his gallery.
“Things are always changing; it gives us a context of what we feel is our sense of place,” said Potanovic.

“It’s nice to have an exhibit for this month and a presentation by the photographer,” said Pauline Brower, Reference Librarian at the Suffern Free Library.
Many came to check out the gallery, talk to Potanovic and ask questions.
“It’s interesting to see the contrast between what our county looked like back then and now," said Barbara Citrone, an audience member.
The gallery is at Suffern Library until April 29. To see more of George Potanovic’s photography you can visit his website.
