UPDATE: Man, 25, Killed As Car Hits Tree In Nanuet

A 25-year-old Spring Valley man died last night when the car he was driving slammed into a tree on Lawrence Street in Nanuet, according to Clarkstown police.

Shane Thompson was declared dead at the scene of the 10:45 p.m. accident after he was rescued from his mother's wrecked 1999 Honda Accord by volunteer members of the Spring Valley Fire Department, said Sgt. Harry Baumann. Thompson was alone in the car.

Thompson was assisted by members of Rockland Paramedics. The body was removed by the Rockland County Medical Examiner's Office.

Baumann said the Clarkstown police accident investigation team has not completed its probe of the crash. However, excessive speed is being examined as a possible cause of the fatal accident.

The accident took place on Lawrence Street near Drayton Place. The investigation cloed a portion of Lawrence Street closed to traffic overnight.
