Police: Total Of 4 Cars Were Damaged In DWI Accident In Nanuet

Wheel flew off car, damaging two other vehicles.

The number of cars damaged in a DWI-related crash on Route 304 in Nanuet has grown to four, according to Clarkstown police.

In addition to the two cars directly involved in the 6:15 p.m. incident near Demarest Mill Road, police said that a wheel that broke free from one of the cars damaged two other vehicles.

The crash led to the arrest of Thomas Mathew, 64, of New City, on charges of driving while intoxicated and assault.

Police said on Monday that a car driven by Mathew was headed north on Route 304 when it cut off and hit another car. The driver and the passenger in that second car were injured and were trapped in the wreckage until they could be freed by volunteers from the .

The injured driver and passenger were taken by volunteers from Nanuet Ambulance Corps to Nyack Hospital for treatment.

Police said it was a tire from the car driven by Mathew that broke off in the crash.

Mathew was administered a field sobriety test at the scene and later failed a chemical breath test for alcohol at Clarkstown police headquarters in New City, police said.

Mathew faces a Town Court hearing on Wednesday.
