RCAC of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Partners with Northern Manor

Northern Manor Geriatric Center, the 231-bed skilled nursing facility in Nanuet, is now collaborating with the Rockland County Alumnae Chapter (RCAC) of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. in a new innovative warm approach to further enrich the lives of the residents at the facility on North Middletown Road. The first event of this alliance took place on Saturday, October 29 when one of the Sorority’s committees “Friends With a Blessing” did a Fall Kickoff whereby nearly 25 of their volunteers came to the North Middletown Road facility to do an autumn trimming of the facility’s rotunda, decorated with colorful fall leaves and Halloween pumpkin pictures.

The sorority’s leadership and volunteers, not only decorated the large rotunda with this beautiful fall look, but they also conducted a raffle and did a quiz with the residents based on the fall season. The residents loved it and made this first event of this partnership a success.

Dr. Carol Matthews, Chairperson of the “Friends with a Blessing” committee, formed this collaboration with Patricia Bowman, Recreation Director at Northern Manor, back in September. A Christmas Caroling event for the holidays has been finalized for December and other events are in the works for 2023.

“This is an amazing group of women,” said Bowman. “What they have provided for our residents has been remarkable and this is only the beginning.”

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. originally chose Northern Manor as one of their sorority sisters twenty years ago, Ms. Merle George, happens to be a Northern Manor resident and was present at the fall kickoff event. What’s even more beautiful is that Ms. George’s daughter-in-law is a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sister currently.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is a proud 109-year-old national organization, formed in 1913 at Howard University in Washington DC. The president of the Rockland chapter of the Sorority, Ms. Ouida Foster Toutebon, was also at the event, as was the well-known dynamic speaker, Dr. Daphne Mobley.
