Rockland Honors WWII Vet for Military, Community Service
Concentration camp liberator Alan Moskin was named Veteran of the Year by the Veterans Coordinating Council.
The Rockland County Legislature proclaimed Nov. 8, 2015 as Alan Moskin Day to honor a Nanuet resident and World War II hero for his service in the military and his ongoing efforts to educate today’s young people about the war and the Holocaust.
Moskin was also named the Veteran of the Year by the Rockland County Veterans Coordinating Council and honored during a ceremony on the County Courthouse steps.
“It’s a privilege to honor a man with the military and community service exhibited by Al Moskin,” Rockland County Legislator Phil Soskin (D-Monsey) said. “He served in the Army and was a liberator of the Gunskirchen Concentration Camp, a sub camp of Mauthausen.

“He serves as an advocate of those who suffered in the concentration camps in Europe by educating today’s young people about the history that he lived through,” Soskin said. “Al Moskin is a true hero and son of Rockland County.”
Rockland County Legislature Chairman Alden H. Wolfe also praised Moskin for his many contributions.

“He saw things no one should ever have to see and through those experiences has become a champion fighting against hatred and intolerance,” Wolfe said. “We need more Alan Moskins in the world.”
Moskin was drafted at age 18 and served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946, fighting with General George Patton’s 3rd Army and seeing combat in France, Germany and Austria. Moskin participated in the liberation of the concentration camp and after returning to the U.S. became a lawyer.
Moskin is a docent with the Holocaust Museum & Study Center based at Rockland Community College and spends significant time educating middle and high school students.
