NEW YORK CITY— A woman is dead and eight suffered injuries in a large explosion and fire that leveled a Bronx building Tuesday, authorities said.

The blast shook Fox Street near Intervale Avenue about 10:55 a.m. and brought 100 emergency responders rushing toward the leveled building, as seen photos published by the department's Twitter account.

The woman who died and her sister were inside the building during the explosion and both were thrown to the street by the blast, FDNY Chief of Department John Hodgens said at a press briefing in The Bronx.

Five NYPD officers were among those injured in the blast and two people remain in serious condition, added Mayor Eric Adams.

"When you see the body cam video, you're going to see the quick responses of the officers going into a burning building next door from the explosion," he said. "Not realizing if there would have been an additional explosion, but they went inside and carried out a woman who was trapped inside."

The incident is the second fatal major fire to strike the Bronx in as many weeks. A Jan. 9 blaze on East 181st Street claimed 17 lives and prompted a mass outpouring of mourning.

Adams said Con Edison turned off gas for the block and fire investigators have launched a probe into what caused the explosion.

He said people smelled gas before the blast.

Because of incorrect information provided by a FDNY spokesperson, a previous version of this story had the wrong number of people injured in the incident.
