NEW YORK, NY — Mayor Zohran Mamdani and first lady Rama Duwaji have been invited to the Met Gala but will not attend, according toa report by Page Six.
“He’s not coming,” a source told the outlet. “It would be foolish if he did … can you imagine? It goes against everything he believes in.”
The annual fundraiser, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, draws political leaders, celebrities and business figures and supports the museum’s Costume Institute.
According to the report, the event is being financially backed in part by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez-Bezos, who are serving as lead donors and honorary co-chairs.
Mamdani has previously said he does not think the U.S. should have billionaires.
New York City mayors have regularly attended the gala.
Eric Adams appeared at the event in 2022, while Bill de Blasio attended in 2021. Michael Bloomberg attended frequently during and after his tenure.
The gala is organized with the involvement of Anna Wintour, who recently praised Duwaji in an interview, saying she is “young and modern and also entirely herself.”
Representatives for the mayor, the museum and Vogue did not comment, according to the report.
The gala’s guest list typically includes prominent figures across entertainment, fashion and sports, and serves as one of the city’s highest-profile cultural events.
