New York's Top Judge To Host Second Look Act Symposium In Brooklyn: Learn More

The event at the Brooklyn Law School aims to raise awareness on the Second Look Act and the fight for sentencing reform.

| Updated

BROOKLYN, NY — Chief Judge Rowan Wilson along with a group of Brooklyn elected officials are hosting another Second Look Symposium this week in an effort to raise awareness on sentencing reforms.

Wilson has been advocating passage of the Second Look Act, a bill that would give individuals the chance to request a resentencing hearing 10 years into their sentence.

The next event, hosted by the advocacy group Communities not Cages, is slated for May 8 at the Brooklyn Law School from noon to 2 p.m.

The bill is sponsored by State senator Julia Salazar and looks to give New Yorkers the opportunity to have their sentencing reviewed — especially those who were convicted of nonviolent crimes.

Wilson previously hosted a Second Look symposium in March at the CUNY School of Law in Queens.

He said at the time it was “stupid” that current laws didn't allow for judges to reevaluate massive sentences given to individuals who have likely better themselves while being held behind bars.
