NEW YORK CITY — Train tickets from New York City's Penn Station to MetLife Stadium for World Cup games this summer just got cheaper — but still not appease all soccer fans.
New Jersey Transit and the FIFA New York New Jersey Host Committee has said that the round trip tickets have been reduced to $105 — after they initially announced a $150 price.
The original price was met with backlash from soccer fans and local elected officials.
According to the Athletic, the transit agency received monetary support from "sponsors and other sources which allowed them to lower the price.
An average round trip ticket from Penn Station to MetLife Stadium is $12.90.
During World Cup games, Penn Station will only be open to commuters with match day tickets beginning four hours before the start of games.
The New York City/New Jersey joint host committee disclosed that a cheaper alternative — an $80 bus service will be available during the games.
New Jersey governor Mikie Sherrill has criticized the pricing adding that NJ PATH commuters should not carry burden of the increased costs during the World Cup.
Sherrill has called on FIFA to cover the reported $48 million gap in transportation costs.
Train tickets to MetLife Stadium will go on sale on May 13. The first game at MetLife Stadium is June 13.
