NEW YORK, NY— Dangerous heat and deteriorating air quality spread across New York City on Monday.
An Air Quality Alert will remain in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday for portions of the New York City metropolitan area, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters said 80-degree temperatures, stagnant conditions and elevated ozone levels are driving pollution levels into unhealthy ranges, primarily hazardous for sensitive groups.
The weather service advises older adults, children and people with respiratory illnesses to take more precautions, including extra hydration and limiting outside exposure.
The National Weather Service HeatRisk index reached the moderate category Tuesday across much of the region, particularly affecting people without air conditioning or reliable access to hydration.
The hot stretch of weather is expected to continue into midweek as the cold front pushes east across the state.
New York City will see a stretch of dangerous heat through Wednesday before temperatures drop sharply later in the week.
