NEW YORK CITY — A strike on the Long Island Rail Road is likely to affect the Monday evening commute for thousands of New Yorkers traveling to and from New York City.
Talks between the MTA and Long Island Rail Road workers ended around 1 a.m. on Monday. They were expected to return to the bargaining table at 7:30 a.m.
The strike has shut down LIRR train service which carries more than 270,000 passengers a day between Long Island and New York City.
In the morning, commuters traveling into Manhattan from Long Island were put on shuttle buses beginning at 4:30 a.m.
More than 3,500 LIRR workers from five unions walked off job after midnight on Saturday after trying to negotiate pay raises with the MTA.
The agency has told New Yorkers to work from home during the strike and said shuttle buses would not be able to accommodate all riders.
They have started to issue refunds to riders with monthly rail passes for the days without train service.
The strike could also affect the New York Knicks game on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.
The Knicks face the Cleveland Cavaliers tomorrow at 8 p.m. at for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Many Knicks fans from Long Island take the train to Penn Station.
