NEW YORK CITY — New trash bin rules went into effect on Monday, but the city will not be issuing tickets this summer.
While NYC Bins will be required for trash collection beginning June 1, the Department of Sanitation will not issue any summonses until Sept. 8 — instead giving homeowners warnings in the meantime.
Property owners with one to nine residential units will be required to use the official NYC Bin.
The city has offered three different bin sizes for property owners — 25-gallon, 35-gallon and 45-gallon bins.
The Department of Sanitation has said that it's the property owner's responsible that there are enough bins to hold all the trash.
After Sept. 8, those that don't buy an official trash bin will be hit with a $50 ticket for the first offense, and it rises to $200 for the third offense.
City trash bins are available for purchase at a number of Home Depot locations across the city and are available for pickup via homedepot.com/NYCBins.
The NYC Bin was first introduced in July 2024 as part of the city's effort to clean up sidewalks of black trash bags and rats.
