Today's riddle: What is the difference between a jeweler and a jailer? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Rents Start At $1,517 In Affordable Manhattan Housing Lottery (patch.com) — New Yorkers looking for below-market rents in Manhattan have until Sept. 2 to apply for 11 affordable apartments at 125 Chrystie St. on the Lower East Side. Studios to two-bedrooms are available through NYC Housing Connect for households meeting specific income limits tied to area median income, with amenities like in-unit laundry, balconies, and a building spa and yoga studio.
2. Family seeks answers, arrest after delivery worker killed in apparent road rage shooting (abc7ny.com) — A 27-year-old delivery worker was shot and killed in an apparent road rage incident in East New York, where family and neighbors held a vigil and pleaded for answers. Community leaders, the New York Sikh Council, and a top City Hall safety official joined calls to curb gun violence. Police are still searching for the shooter and asking New Yorkers for tips.
3. Times Square, New York, The Place to Be for Caribbean Culture on August 30th. (ebuzztt.com) — Times Square will burst with Caribbean color on August 30 as Tropicalfete's free Pop-Up Carnival takes over Broadway between 46th and 47th streets, inviting New Yorkers to dress in costume and wave their flags. Headlined by soca star Rupee and featuring Brooklyn-based violinist Mapy, the event also includes fitness sessions, steel pan, and official city and state honors recognizing Caribbean cultural contributions.
4. Watchdog flags single author on multiple New York heat maps tied to utility shutoff protections (thecooldown.com) — New York utilities are under scrutiny after a watchdog found several companies used the same author for heat-island maps that determine who gets extra protection from power shutoffs during dangerous heat. The maps, required by the New York Public Service Commission, directly affect New York City residents, where hundreds die annually from heat-related causes. Regulators are taking public comments on the analyses through Sept. 8.
5. Gambian Arrested and Released in SDNY on EDKY Conspiracy Indictment Due There Sept 9 (innercitypress.com) — A man from The Gambia was arrested in New York and brought before a magistrate judge in Manhattan's federal courthouse on an indictment from Kentucky. He was released on a $50,000 unsecured bond and ordered to appear in Covington, Kentucky on September 9. Inner City Press reported it was the only media outlet present in the SDNY courtroom.
