From Wall Street to Philanthropy: Ed Hajim’s 50-Year Journey in Finance and Leadership

After 5 decades on Wall Street, Ed Hajim has built a legacy of leadership, philanthropy and opportunity shaped by his remarkable life story

This post was contributed by a community member.

For more than five decades, Ed Hajim has been a fixture in the world of investment management, building a career that has taken him through some of the most prominent names in finance while also creating a significant legacy in education and philanthropy.

The son of a Syrian immigrant, Hajim's professional journey includes senior management positions with the Capital Group, E.F. Hutton and Lehman Brothers. He later became chairman and CEO of Furman Selz, continuing a career that would span more than 50 years in investment management.

His leadership roles eventually expanded across the international financial industry. Hajim served as co-chairman of ING Barings, Americas Region, as well as chairman and CEO of ING Aeltus Group and ING Furman Selz Asset Management. He also served as chairman and CEO of MLH Capital.

Today, Hajim is chairman of High Vista, a Boston-based money management company.

While his career has been defined by major leadership positions and decades of experience in finance, Hajim's story is also one of overcoming significant adversity.

His early life was far removed from the corporate offices and financial institutions where he would eventually build his career. As a child, he spent time in foster care while his father was at sea during World War II. Those experiences became an important part of the story he has shared throughout his life.

In 2015, Hajim received the Horatio Alger Award, an honor presented to Americans who demonstrate initiative, leadership and commitment to excellence while overcoming personal adversity.

The award recognized more than professional achievement. It reflected a life in which difficult early circumstances were followed by educational opportunities, a long career and a commitment to helping others access those same opportunities.

Education has remained one of the most important parts of Hajim's philanthropic work.

His relationship with the University of Rochester began long before he became chairman of its board. After serving as a university trustee for 20 years, Hajim became chairman of the university's Board of Trustees in 2008, beginning an eight-year tenure in the role.

When he assumed the chairmanship, Hajim made a $30 million gift to the university, at the time the largest single donation in its history. The gift supported scholarships and helped endow the Edmund A. Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

His involvement with the university reflects a broader interest in creating opportunities through education, particularly for students who may not otherwise have the resources to pursue their ambitions.

That commitment extends beyond higher education.

Through the Hajim Family Foundation, he has supported organizations working in education, health care, arts and culture, and conservation. His philanthropy has allowed him to direct some of the success he accumulated during his financial career toward causes outside the investment world.

There is a consistent thread connecting those two sides of his life: opportunity.

Hajim's career in finance required years of education, judgment, adaptability and leadership. His philanthropic efforts have focused in part on helping provide other people with the resources and opportunities that can shape their own futures.

His story also offers a different perspective on the traditional Wall Street success story.

Rather than ending with a career in finance, Hajim's professional accomplishments have become a platform for continued involvement in education, philanthropy and leadership. His experience across decades of changes in the financial industry has given him a perspective shaped by both professional achievement and personal experience.

For New Yorkers familiar with Wall Street's influence on the city's identity, Hajim's career represents a particularly long view of the financial world. His experience stretches across generations of investment firms, changing markets and evolving approaches to money management.

Yet his legacy is not limited to finance.

From the University of Rochester to organizations supported through the Hajim Family Foundation, his philanthropic interests have touched fields ranging from education and health care to arts, culture and conservation.

The result is a career measured not only by the positions Hajim has held, but also by what he has chosen to do with the opportunities those positions provided.

More than 50 years after beginning his career in investment management, Hajim continues to work in finance while maintaining his involvement in causes beyond the business world.

His journey from a challenging childhood to the highest levels of the financial industry, followed by decades of philanthropy and institutional leadership, is ultimately a story about what can happen when professional success is paired with a commitment to creating opportunities for others.
