1 Dead, 3 Injured After Truck Jumps Sidewalk In Manhattan, Police Say

Police said that the driver of the flatbed truck has been taken into custody, and that charges against the man are pending.

CHINATOWN, NY — One pedestrian was killed and three people were injured on Thursday morning after a truck jumped a curb in Chinatown, New York City Police Department officials said.

According to the NYPD, the crash happened around 10:20 a.m. when a 66-year-old man driving a flatbed truck was heading Westbound from the Manhattan Bridge and onto the Bowery and Canal Street intersection when the truck jumped the curb, striking three pedestrians.

In a chain reaction, a van driven by a 47-year-old man hit the back of the flatbed truck, police said.

One pedestrian, a 77-year-old man, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital and pronounced dead, police said. Two other pedestrians, a 52-year-old and a 71-year-old woman, were also injured and rushed to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

The 47-year-old man driving the van was injured and treated at the scene, police said.

Police said that the driver of the flatbed truck has been taken into custody, and that charges against the man are pending.

The name of the pedestrian who died is being kept private until his family can be properly notified.
