NEW YORK CITY— Harvey Weinstein, the former Hollywood film producer whose name became synonymous with sexual assault, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison for his conviction for the 2006 criminal sexual assault on his former television production assistant Miriam Haley at his Manhattan apartment.
Weinstein was being sentenced for a second time, after his prior conviction in the case was overturned in 2024.
A Manhattan jury had convicted Weinstein in 2020 of sexually assaulting Haley and raping aspiring actor Jessica Mann. A judge sentenced him to 23 years in prison.
The New York Supreme Court overturned those convictions in 2024, ruling the trial judge had improperly allowed testimony from women whose allegations did not form part of the charges against Weinstein.
The sentence follows years of appeals, retrials and competing legal proceedings in New York and California.
Judge Curtis Farber said Weinstein had used Haley's ambitions in the film industry to gain access to her before assaulting her.
"You had it all," Farber said. "Your legacy could have been cemented with greatness. But you threw it all away by assaulting Miriam Haley."
Haley addressed the court before sentencing, describing seven years of public harassment and humiliation following the assault.
"Having been sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein has had a devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away," Haley said.
She accused Weinstein, his defense team and podcasters — who she said she believes received payment to damage her reputation — of publicly smearing her.
Prosecutors sought a 20-year sentence followed by five years of post-release supervision. Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg argued Weinstein had shown no remorse for his crimes.
His lawyers had sought a nine-year sentence, citing his health problems, including blood cancer and heart disease.
Weinstein apologized to Haley during his statement to the court.
"I live with many regrets and sincerely apologize for my actions," he said.
After the state Supreme Court overturned Weinstein's 2020 conviction, prosecutors brought the case back to trial in 2025.
In that retrial, jurors convicted Weinstein of a criminal sexual act involving Haley and acquitted him of a separate sexual assault charge involving former model Kaja Sokola.
The jury could not reach a verdict on the rape charge involving Mann.
Prosecutors retried that charge earlier this year, but jurors deadlocked in May.
Prosecutors later dropped the charge after Mann said she could not endure another trial.
Weinstein also faces a separate sentence in California after a 2022 conviction for rape and sexual assault involving an Italian model in a hotel room during a film festival.
A California appeals court upheld the conviction in June.
Weinstein could serve the California sentence before beginning his New York term. Farber said California authorities will ultimately determine whether the sentences run consecutively or concurrently.
More than 80 women have publicly accused Weinstein of sexual assault or other misconduct. The allegations and criminal cases against him helped propel the #MeToo movement, which brought widespread attention to sexual harassment and sexual violence.
Weinstein has denied many of the allegations against him.
