NEW YORK CITY— Krispy Kreme plans to open 33 shops across the New York City metropolitan area over the next five years, expanding the doughnut chain's presence under a new franchise agreement.
Krispy Kreme currently has eight locations across New York City, including shops in Times Square and on the Upper East and Upper West sides of Manhattan.
Brooklyn currently has no Krispy Kreme locations, leaving the door open for the doughnut chain to expand into theborough as it grows its New York-area presence.
The Charlotte, North Carolina-based company announced the agreement Tuesday, with Original Entrepreneurs LLC, a longtime franchise operator that currently runs 12 Krispy Kreme shops.
The expansion will bring new locations to New York City and surrounding communities, though the company has not announced specific sites or opening dates.
Original Entrepreneurs, headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey, opened its first Krispy Kreme shop in 2017.
The operator later expanded into Springfield, East Rutherford, Paramus and Lakewood, New Jersey, before entering New York.
The agreement supports Krispy Kreme's strategy of expanding through franchise operators, allowing the company to grow its shop network without funding every new location directly.
Karl Halligan and John Mondry, principals of Original Entrepreneurs, said the company plans to build on its existing relationship with Krispy Kreme and expand its regional presence.
