NEW TORK CITY— A retired New York City police officer faces a murder charge in the fatal shooting of a Rockland County man on the George Washington Bridge, authorities said.
Victor Romero, 62, of Haverstraw, New York, surrendered to police at the New York Police Department's 33rd Precinct after investigators accused him of killing Koran Irvine, 46, a Con Edison employee who lived in Rockland County.
Police arrested Romero in connection with the shooting, which occurred Tuesday evening on the bridge. He retired from the department in 2001.
Irvine suffered a gunshot wound to the head, according to police.
Investigators have not disclosed a suspected motive.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reported that officers found Irvine unconscious and unresponsive in the driver's seat of his vehicle after a crash on the bridge's westbound upper level shortly after 7 p.m.
The vehicle struck a barrier on the westbound side of the bridge after the shooting. Irvine sustained at least one gunshot wound to his right rear shoulder, according to police.
Emergency responders took Irvine to Englewood Hospital in Bergen County, New Jersey, where medical staff pronounced him dead.
