Chris Chierchio | New York City Is Now The Top Tech City

The west coast has been known as the technology capital of the country for most of the recent years. Cities like San Francisco, Seattle, and the whole Silicon Valley have been the top dogs when it comes to technology-based cities. This year has now changed that fact and for the first time ever, New York City has passed San Francisco to finally take the first spot on the Savills Tech Cities index.

The reasoning behind the new ranking is New York City’s availability of a deep talent pool and venture capital. New York has the ability to “generate its own talent, and recruit from around the world.” said Paul Tovstein who wrote the report. The Savills report finds 30 cities around the world that are tech-based cities and grades them on things like talent pool, investment opportunities, real estate, and transportation from the past three years.

The breakdown shows that New York scored lower than the top five on the talent pool category but was boosted up by other categories such as business environment and tech environment. The other top five cities in the talent pool category were San Francisco, London, Amsterdam, and Boston. Austin, Texas, a city that was considered a top two city in the last reports from Savills, fell to spot eight this year.

Some see the newest ranking a result from Amazon’s deal with New York City to build its secondary headquarters, HQ2, in Long Island City. Google is also looking to build a new campus in Hudson Square, and Apple is planning on acquiring 600,000 square feet of offices in New York City. All three of these tech giants can be a culprit behind the new jump in ranking for New York, or the same reasons these companies are choosing New York, is the same reason Savills sees New York as the top tech city in the world.
