Christopher Chierchio | Wegmans Looks To Build First NYC Store

Grocery store company, Wegmans, is looking to build its first store in New York City. The company is based in Rochester, NY and has almost 50 locations throughout the state already, and up until now, never had one in the city. The store is slated to open in the fall of 2019 and will be located in Brooklyn. The plans to open this store first originally came up back in 2015 and the company is now able to realize the plan.

The new location is estimated to be around 74,000 square feet and will be part of the new Admirals Row development sector on Flushing Avenue within the Brooklyn Navy Yard. It will feature a new mezzanine for seating on the second floor that will hold about 100 people. The location will also feature the notable market, along with a bar that will serve food and alcohol.
As preparation, the company wants to hire 500 new employees for the location before the store opens. Out of those 500 positions, 150 will be full-time positions within the store. Hiring for the full-time spots is open now, with the process for part-time to begin closer to opening. The full-time positions vary from entry-level management, chefs and line cooks, and customer service representatives. There are a minimal amount of bakery and culinary part-time spots open at the moment.

Wegmans first opened its doors in 1916 and has now almost 100 stores in six different states, with the most stores in New York followed by Pennsylvania. The company is a private, family-owned business that is still in control by the Wegman family. Currently, there are around 48,000 employees throughout the company.

The Brooklyn store is one of three other store opening for the 2019 year, with two other locations to be opened in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Raleigh, North Carolina. The Raleigh location will be the first store within the state of North Carolina as well, marking the seventh state. Plans for other stores to be opened in North Carolina are in the works for the coming years.
