Former NYC Council Member Gets 3 Months In Prison: Report

Chaim Deutsch, a once-prominent lawmaker from Brooklyn, is headed to prison after he pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns.

NEW YORK CITY — A federal judge sentenced former New York City Councilman Chaim Deutsch to three months in prison for tax fraud, the New York Post reported.

According to the Post, Deutsch is also ordered to pay a fine of $5,500, as well as the full amount of tax money he owes, including interest.

City Council members vacated Deutsch's seat under state law in April after he pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns. Federal prosecutors said Deutsch avoided paying $82,000 in taxes between 2013 and 2015.

Deutsch told the court he has been working as a property manager in Brooklyn since his exit from City Council, the Post reports.

Before his expulsion, Deutsch served the 48th Council District, which is still vacant. The 48th District is in south Brooklyn and includes Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, and a small part of Coney Island.
