All those tchotchkes — and more — gifted to former New York City mayors are up for bid in an online auction called "Gifts To The City"
"This rare opportunity to own a piece of history features items from the City’s Municipal Archives, including art, jewelry, sports memorabilia, and other keepsakes," the auction's site states.

As public servants, New York City mayors can't actually own the gifts they receive. Those items are owned by the city itself and, by extension, the taxpayers.
The list of auction items itself provides a fascinating portrait of the day-to-day and ceremonial lives of past city mayors.
Here's a selection of items up for auction.
Former Mayor Ed Koch hosted "Saturday Night Live" in 1983, and received a framed photograph in the process.
The item, as of Thursday morning, had seven bids that ran up the price to $137.50. The auction ends Dec. 4.

Mayor Dinkins - Glass Paperweight Gifted by Diana Ross
Legendary singer Diana Ross gifted a glass paperweight to former mayor Dinkens during a Friar's Club event.
"The item is marked with a Friar's Club logo," the auction listing states.
Bidders ran up the cost to $113, as of Thursday morning. The auction also ends Dec. 4.

Mayor Guiliani - Louis Vuitton Soccer Ball to Commemorate 1998 World Cup
Just in time for the 2024 World Cup in Qatar, this luxury gift to former mayor Giuliani is up for auction.
The ball itself has Louis Vuitton's classic pattern.
The price stood at $1,125 as of Thursday morning. The auction ends Dec. 11.

Mayor Bloomberg - Resistol Cowboy Hat from CMA Awards
Can you imagine diminutive former mayor Bloomberg in a cowboy hat?
This "Resistol cowboy hat" was given to Mayor Bloomberg to commemorate the Country Music Awards held in New York City, according to the auction listing.
After 18 bids, the price stood at $192.50 as of Thursday morning. The auction ends Dec. 4.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit the city's Municipal Archives Reference and Research Fund, which supports projects to preserve and provide access to historical and contemporary records in the Municipal Archives and Library.
