NEW YORK CITY — It’ll be back to school — again — for students no longer in New York City’s shrinking red and orange coronavirus zones.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said 23 schools that no longer fall under closure restrictions will reopen for in-person classes Thursday.

Hizzoner made the announcement shortly before the state completely lifted a “red zone” covering Brooklyn. But 22 schools in what is now an “orange” zone will remain closed because of continuing restrictions.

Color-coded zones in Brooklyn and Queens were established last month to deal with localized coronavirus hotspots. The most restrictive zones — red — closed non-essential businesses and schools to stop the virus’ spread.

The situation in the zones has steadily improved, but worrisome COVID-19 spikes have sprung up elsewhere in the city, especially Staten Island.

De Blasio said Tuesday that the city’s overall daily positivity rate stood at 2.88 percent — near the threshold for officials to consider shutting down schools citywide.
