NEW YORK CITY — Hail battered New York City Saturday as a severe thunderstorm descended seemingly from nowhere.

An unseasonably warm morning that saw diners enjoying brunch out of doors was suddenly disturbed by strong winds and heavy rains. People dashed for cover as large hail stones began to fall.

The National Weather Service reported winds gusts as high as 60mph and hail an inch in diameter.

Video and photos of the storm, which passed as quickly as it arrived, filled social media.

In Tuxedo Park, just northwest of New York City, the hail appeared to be even more significant.

And further east on Long Island, communities were under a tornado warning with reports of damage.

Here's the New York City forecast for the rest of the weekend, courtesy of the NWS:

Saturday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 36. Breezy, with a west wind 14 to 24 mph.

Sunday: Increasing clouds, with a high near 52. Southwest wind 9 to 11 mph.

Sunday Night: A slight chance of showers between 10 p.m. and midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. Southwest wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.
