Heat Advisory Blankets NYC As Temps Soar Into High 90s

NEW YORK CITY — Sweltering heat is replacing record-setting wet weather in New York City.

A heat advisory will blanket the city Wednesday from noon until Thursday at 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Heat indices both days are expected to reach the mid to upper 90s, the advisory states.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city will reopen cooling centers for New Yorkers without access to air conditioning.

"This is very serious heat you should not underestimate" he said during his daily briefing. "Again, just change what you're doing. If you can spend less time outside, you don't need to go somewhere — don't go there and just avoid the heat."

New Yorkers can expect sunny, hot weather over Wednesday and Thursday, according to the forecast. Those who need to find a cooling center by calling 311 or visiting nyc.gov/beattheheat.
