58 Skymeadow Drive in Stamford, an historic home built in 1870, and once home to prolific writer Sholem Asch, is currently for sale. The home sits on over an acre of property in North Stamford, just off of High Ridge Road and has been updated and expanded over the years to now offer 4000 square feet of living space, 4 bedrooms, 4 full baths and includes an in-ground pool and hot tub in addition to multiple outdoor spaces for entertaining.

Asch, a Polish-Jewish novelist and a celebrated writer in his own lifetime, penned the controversial drama, God of Vengeance. The play was performed in a dozen European languages and brought to New York City in 1907. Orthodox papers referred to God of Vengeance as "filthy," "immoral," and "indecent," while radical papers described it as "moral," "artistic," and "beautiful". It was published in English-language translation in 1918 and in 1922, it was staged in New York City at the Provincetown Theatre in Greenwich Village, and moved to the Apollo Theatre on Broadway in February of 1923.

Asch moved to Stamford, Connecticut in 1939 and lived in the Skymeadow home for much of the 1940’s, entertaining the likes of Belarusian and French artist Marc Chagall, who sketched a picture of Asch while sitting in the now paneled bedroom on the second floor of the home.

Almost a century later, the bucolic estate, reminiscent of Tuscany, with romantic outdoor patios and expertly planted gardens, boasts beautiful indoor touches, marrying the warmth of pristine original wood trim and wide-plank floors in a bright open floor plan. Multiple spaces for entertaining, dining and working include a first floor office, an expansive sun-room with kitchenette and large covered deck near the pool and hot tub, windowed breakfast room and family and living rooms with fireplaces. The original wood-burning fireplace, a magnificent focal point in the living room has been lovingly restored. The gourmet kitchen has a Lacanche range, Cambria quartz countertops, Subzero refrigerator, two islands, two sinks and breakfast and coffee bars. The four spacious upstairs bedrooms provide unusually abundant closet space for an antique home and the sunny primary bedroom suite includes a sitting area and an updated bath with heated floor.
