How to Control Your Expectations and Find Happiness

It's not a secret that all of us have expectations in our lives

It’s not bad to know what you want out of life, who you want to become and what direction you choose. The problem comes when we start to have too high expectations of ourselves and people around us. I truly believe that the key to happy and fruitful life lies within the ability to manage the expectations of people and circumstances.

The nature of the relationships is simple: depending on the situations sometimes you give more and sometimes the other party gives more. Generally, most of us tend to think that because of the way we treat others, other people will put the same level of effort in return. In fact, it’s not always true. The situation remains good while the “give and take” principle balances out. But I’ve discovered that not everyone prefers playing by these rules. This is when the disappointment may come.

The greatest frustration in life is usually an outcome of misplaced expectations, especially when it comes to relationships. Thus, one of the most significant challenges we have to overcome is learning how to accept others for who they truly are. Correct your expectations of others and you will surely reduce the feelings of disappointment and pain in your heart, and finally have an opportunity to focus on things that really matter. Just realize that your expectations of other people can’t change them. But you are able to change your attitude and, as a result, find happiness in your interactions with others.

Here are 3 main steps that helped me take my thoughts about life challenges and people around me under control.

1. Improve your reality or lower your expectations

Unrealistic expectations of life lead to total disappointment. Too often we become so obsessed with getting the ideal partner or perfect job that find ourselves in frustration when this doesn't happen. Sometimes, we don’t allow ourselves to enjoy the experience altogether focusing narrowly on particular circumstances and living up to preconceived notions. If you feel this way, don’t stay on this dead-end road any longer. Remember that after the rain the sun always shines, so learn to accept different seasons in your life, and go into them with an open mind. What is more important, keeping the right awareness of your realities, you will find out what you should truly expect from other.

Creating realistic expectations of yourself, your life and people around allows accepting the flawless every human being has. In fact, you came to this world not to live up to the expectations of others. On the other hand, they also shouldn’t live up to yours. In case, you constantly struggle with ignorance or can’t cope with rejection, find a person who owns as big of a heart as you do. Make sure that you are in the relationship where the person appreciates what you do and can reciprocate your efforts. Dignity, self-honesty, respect and mutual trust are the fundamental principles of any healthy interaction and life’s greatest rewards.

What I’ve found in the place of complete disappointment in my life is that the more I approve of my decisions, the less approval I desire from others. You deserve to live an inspired life full of joy, love, and acceptance. Don’t let someone else's opinions make you forget about that. Don’t compare yourself to others or get discouraged by their success. Instead, focus on your life goals, find your purpose and stay true to it. No doubt, doing this, you will realize that true happiness is about living life in your own way, even if this way is not always perfect.

2. Accept without reservation and give without expectation

Respecting people means allowing them to be themselves. It’s true that you can’t change others. In fact, you shouldn’t even try. I learned from experience that when you leave off expecting others to act in a certain way, you begin to appreciate them in the right manner. Usually, when you try hard to change someone, it brings nothing but disappointments as they remain the same. But just let it go, allow others to be as they are and you’ll see the extraordinary transformation. In cases I just can’t find the strength to be patient with other people, I recall the key phrase from my favorite book To Kill a Mockingbird that says, ‘You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.’ I couldn't agree more. The truth is that what really changes is not other people but the way you see them.

Every person is unique and remarkable, just arm yourself with patience to see this. Understand that you don’t know others even half as well as you think so. That’s why the more you get to know someone, the more you will see not only their appearance but inner beauty.

On the other side, there will always be someone who attacks you, even if you are good to them. Just smile, keep on going and never forget your worth. Perhaps, you feel unwanted to someone, but you can be totally priceless to another person.

3. Expect the unexpected with a positive attitude to life

Keep in mind that sooner or later life will throw you a curveball. When hard times come, remain confident maintaining a positive attitude, instead of sinking into a depression. Don’t rake over the dust and ashes of the past, but look to the future with aspirations. Just remember not to make them too unreachable. When it comes to expectations, there is one paradoxical issue. If they are too high, you risk ending up disappointed. But if you don’t have expectations at all, your motivation to accomplish a goal amounts to nothing. The balance between these tendencies can save you from the perfectionism, which is far from a healthy lifestyle.

Acceptance is a wonderful attribute, which helps to recognize how the life works and solve the difficulties rather than become frustrated. Instead of overstated expectations, have hope in your heart, as your happiness is directly proportional to your state of mind. Even if the circumstances or relationships don’t work out at all, it’s still worth it as it's your life experience which can teach you something new. Expect less but hope that the best is still yet to come.
