NEW YORK, NY — Milton Glaser, the graphic designer behind the iconic "I ♥ NY" logo, has died at 91.

Glaser, a New York City native and co-founder of New York Magazine, died of natural causes in his home in Manhattan on Friday, his 91st birthday, according to his obituary in the publication.

"Around our office, of course, he will forever be one of the small team of men and women who, in the late ’60s, yanked New York out of the newspaper morgue and turned it into a great American magazine," the magazine wrote.

Glaser, who was born in the Bronx in 1929, is known for a host of iconic designs, including a psychedelic poster of Bob Dylan, the DC Comics logo and the Brooklyn Brewery logo in addition to his "I ♥ NY" symbol.

The logo, which still adorns New York City memorabilia all across the country, was created in 1977 as part of a tourism campaign for New York State, according to the magazine.

Glaser came up with the logo in the backseat of a cab and did the design free of charge.

The designer is survived by his wife, Shirley.

Fans, New Yorkers and colleagues remembered Glaser on Saturday for his talent and dedication to the city he called home.

"What Milton Glaser gave to New York will long survive him," Gov. Andrew Cuomo wrote. "I♥ New York was the perfect logo at the time he created it and remains so today. We lost a brilliant designer and a great New Yorker."
