Tell us more about the first psychiatric visit. What it consists of?

Dr Marshall Hubsher: The first psychiatric visit consists of an interview, which usually lasts about an hour. During this interview, the patient's clinical history data is collected and also, a psychiatric evaluation is performed. At the end of the visit, the most appropriate treatment for the psycho-pathological condition of the patient is recommended. The treatment can be pharmacological, psycho-therapeutic or the association of both.

What is a psychiatric examination?

Dr Marshall Hubsher: In the process of psychiatric evaluation, the psychiatrist examines the patient to find any objectionable indicators of psychopathology. These include alterations of rhythm and fluency of speech, psycho-motor skills, mimicry, expression, tendency to cry, affective ambivalence or affective flattening, hallucinatory behavior, among others.

Do you recommend treatment with medications?

Dr Marshall Hubsher: Medication treatment is not recommended. I use this type of treatment, only if the pathology is serious, or chronic because it was not treated or was treated ineffectively. As a certified psychiatrist, I am allowed to prescribe medications such as antidepressants, anti-psychotic medications, mood stabilizers, stimulants, sedatives and hypnotics if it is needed.

When the psychiatric check-up should be carried out?

Dr Marshall Hubsher: Generally the psychiatric check-up should be carried out after about a month of therapy. This is done in order to evaluate the response to the treatment. If there is no or partial response to the the treatment, a modification of the treatment is assessed.

Tell us more about the psychotherapy session.

Dr Marshall Hubsher: The psychotherapy session allows the patient to undertake a joint path of exploration of thoughts and emotions to understand the possible cause of the disorder and the possible goals that can be achieved with the treatment. Each session lasts for approximately 50 minutes. I recommend one session weekly. The duration of the treatment depends on the response of the patient.
