Latest MTA Fare Hikes In Effect This Week: What To Know

The fare increase was timed to take effect with the system-wide tap-and-go OMNY card launch.

NEW YORK CITY — The latest MTA fare hikes are now in effect this week, with the cost of subway and bus rides going up to start 2026.

The hike will raise bus and subway fares up 10 cents from the previous $2.90 fare to $3. The fare went into effect on Sunday, Jan. 4.

The fare increase was timed to take effect with the system-wide tap-and-go OMNY card launch, after the iconic yellow MetroCard was phased out on Dec. 31, 2025.

The MTA has previously raised fares by 4 percent every two years. Subway riders who qualify for reduced fare would see an $1.50 increase, and express bus riders will pay $7.25 next year.

The toll to cross tunnels and bridges in the city will rise to $7.46 with an EZPASS. LIRR and some Metro-North riders will see an 4.4 percent increase in fares.

The fare hike in 2026 was passed an MTA board in late September 2025, Patch previously reporte. The fare hike was initially planned to go into effect in August but was delayed.

The last fare increase by the MTA was in August 2023, when fares went up from $2.75 to $2.90.
