Luxury NYC Neighborhoods Post Some Of Nation’s Highest Property Crime Rates

A study of nearly 1.9 million crimes found several expensive Manhattan neighborhoods recorded property crime rates far above city averages.

NEW YORK, NY — Some of New York City’s most recognizable and expensive neighborhoods recorded property crime rates far above the city average, according to a new analysis that examined nearly 1.9 million property crime incidents across major U.S. metropolitan areas.

Home security company Vivint analyzed property crime reports from 2023 and 2024 and compared crime rates in neighborhoods with names often associated with prestige, green space or exclusivity.

New York dominated the list of premium-priced neighborhoods where property crime exceeded local averages. Six city neighborhoods ranked among the nation’s 15 largest outliers.

The study identified 233 neighborhoods nationwide with home values above their metro area's median and names commonly associated with desirable living. Of those, 54 — nearly 1 in 4 — reported more property crime than their metro averages.

Researchers found that neighborhood names often associated with safety did not always align with crime data.

Researchers examined neighborhood-level crime data across 18 metropolitan areas after excluding locations that lacked comparable neighborhood boundary information. They mapped incidents to named neighborhoods and compared local crime rates against metro averages to account for differences in overall crime levels between cities.

The study measured property crimes only, including burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft. It did not examine violent crime and noted that the findings show association rather than causation.
