Michelin Guide 2019: These NYC Restaurants Made The Cut

Here are the top New York City restaurants, according to the world's oldest restaurant guide.

NEW YORK CITY — The Michelin Guide released its annual review of the New York City's top restaurants this week, naming 76 New York eateries as the city's best and doling out more than a dozen new stars in the 2019 guide released Tuesday.

Seventeen restaurants were added to the list that now includes Claro, an Oaxacan eatery near the Gowanus Canal, Jeju Noodle Bar — the United State's first noodle shop to make the Michelin guide — and Basement at Tetsu, which closed after reviewers reported $350 dinners were "overpriced and underwhelming."

Minetta Tavern, Aureole, Ushiwakamaru, Sushi Zo and The Breslin were all stripped of their stars.

Eater was first to report that many of New York's best female chefs — such as April Bloomfield of The Breslin, Einat Admony of Balaboosta and Amanda Cohen of Dirty Candy — were excluded from the list, even after the #MeToo movement rocked the city's culinary scene.

Yet Babbo, Casa Mono, and Del Posto — which all belong to Mario Batali, the restaurateur who stepped away from his empire after multiple sexual misconduct accusations against him surfaced — held on to their stars.

“Michelin stars are awarded to restaurants, not to chefs,” Michelin spokesperson Gwendal Poullennec told Eater. “It’s about what’s on the plate, and has been that way for over a century.”

Michelin also ignores decor and service when awarding stars, focusing solely on the food. According to its website, reviewers grant one star for “high quality cooking,” two stars for “excellent cooking” and three stars for “exceptional cuisine"
