Winning the prestigious Mr. Harlem Shake 2024 contest is a dream come true for Raliek Mitchiner. At 24, Mitchiner is a boxing coordinator and counselor for two nonprofit agencies. But his journey to this achievement is as inspiring as it gets.

Mr. / Miss Harlem Shake 2024 contest crowned its winners at the end of June. The contest is organized annually by Jelena Pasic, founder of the Harlem Shake restaurant, and celebrates local heroes and their contributions to the community. For Mitchiner, this contest was not only a competition, but also an opportunity to showcase his transformation and the positive impact he's making in Harlem.

For Mitchiner, Harlem Shake is more than just a restaurant. "I love Harlem Shake's authentic feel and its 90s diner-style aesthetic that I feel like Harlem will never lose. From the Wall of Fame to its interior, Harlem Shake has a vibe like no other restaurant in Harlem, and I can say that hands down!"

From Polo Grounds to the Spotlight

Mitchiner lives in the Polo Grounds, a neighborhood near the legendary Rucker Park. His life took a transformative turn after a period of juvenile incarceration. Reflecting on his past, he shares, "I changed my life after my juvenile incarceration, and I was able to meet and help change the lives of others through a program I was a major part of." Now, Mitchiner is dedicated to teaching boxing to the youth in his community, guiding them towards other free services, including therapy.

When asked what motivated him to join the Harlem Shake contest, Mitchiner credits his photographer for the push. "My photographer pushed me so I could apply to be Mr. Harlem Shake. I never anticipated winning," he admits with a humble smile.

Mitchiner is affiliated with Guns Down, Life Up, a charity that promotes his youth boxing program. This cause is close to his heart. "I have learned so much and I am happy to give back to support them as much as possible," he says passionately.

Advice for Future Contestants

Winning the contest has significantly impacted Mitchiner’s life and career. "Winning Mr. Harlem Shake is such a great feeling, especially coming from my background. I appreciate Harlem Shake for what they've done for me," he shares, acknowledging the contest's role in elevating his profile and the work he does.

Mitchiner has some valuable advice for future participants of the Harlem Shake contest. "Never sell yourself short," he begins. "Ask people to vote for you, who may not even think that they would vote for you. Be vocal, get yourself out there, and do not be scared to speak about being a contestant. Ask people to promote you on their social media platforms."

His journey from self-doubt to victory is a powerful reminder of what perseverance and community support can achieve. "I didn’t think I could do it. I pulled the victory, and I am so grateful and so glad to be a part of this."

Mitchiner's victory comes just in time for National Ice Cream Day, when Harlem Shake is offering $2 off all milkshakes at all locations, all day long. Additionally, Harlem Shake is excited to participate in the 2024 NYC & Co Restaurant Week, bringing even more attention to its iconic diner-style atmosphere and delicious offerings.
